Edo Bertoglio zog 1976 von Lugano nach New York. Dort arbeite er als Fotograf für die italienische Vogue und Andy Warhols Interview. Durch diese seine Aktivitäten wurde er Teil der Downtown Kunst- und Musikszene. Er heiratete die französische Modedesignerin Maripol, die damals als Geschäftsführerin des Fiorucci Ladens in NY fungierte und für den frühen Look von Madonna zuständig war. 1980 sicherten sich die beiden die Unterstützung von Angelo Rizzoli. (Produierte Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita und 8½ in den frühen 60ern). Edo wollte einen Film drehen über die No Wave Musik Szene und das zugehörende Umfeld in der Lower East Side. Der Film mit dem Titel New York Beat, wurde in der Hauptrolle vom jungen Graffiti-Writer und zukünftigen Künstler Jean-Michel Basquiat gespielt. Im Film tauchen Bands wie; DNA, Tuxedo Moon, The Plastics aus Japan, James Chance and the Contortions und viele weitere wie Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Fab Five Freddy, Deborah Harry von Blondie oder John Lurie in Nebenrollen auf. Als die Aufnahmen im Januar 1981 abgeschlossen wurden, zog sich Rizzoli aus dem Projekt zurück und der Rohfilm lag fast 20 Jahre lang unbearbeitet herum, bis er unter dem Titel Downtown 81 im Jahr 2000 veröffentlicht wurde. Im vergangenen Jahr publizierte der italienische Verleger Yard Press ein wunderbares Buch unter dem Titel New York Polaroids von 1976 bis 1989. Dies ist eigentlich das persönliche Tagebuch von Edo, wo das tägliche Leben von der hier erwähnen Downtown-Szene New Yorks durch zahlreiche Polaroids sehr intim festgehalten wird.
Am Samstag 12. März 2016, um 15 Uhr, wird der Film Downtown 81 im Fotomuseum Winterthur gezeigt. Um 17 Uhr spricht Regisseur und Fotograf Edo Bertoglio über die Musikszene New Yorks und signiert das Buch New York Polaroids 1976-1989.
Edo Bertoglio moved from Lugano to New York in 1976, where he found work as a photographer for Italian Vogue and Andy Warhol's Interview. He than became involved in the downtown art and music scenes. During this time he was married to french fashion designer Maripol who was the buyer of the Fiorucci shop in NY, as well a styliste for Madonna in the early years. In 1980 they both secured backing from Angelo Rizzoli to produce a film about the No Wave music scene and the general Lower East Side milieu. The film, titled New York Beat, was directed by Bertoglio, and young graffiti writer and future artist Jean-Michel Basquiat played the lead role, which was written by Glenn O'Brien to mirror his real life. The No Wave bands DNA, Tuxedo Moon, The Plastics from Tokyo, James Chance and the Contortions, and others appear in the movie, as well as Kid Creole and the Coconuts. Fab Five Freddy, Deborah Harry, John Lurie and others play bit parts. After shooting finished in January 1981 Rizzoli pulled out of funding the project, and footage lay unedited for almost 20 years until released it under the title Downtown 81 in 2000. Last year, the Italien publisher Yard Press did release the wonderful book under the title New York Polaroids 1976-1989. The book is a personal diary by Edo Bertoglio of the daily life of the above mention New York downtown scene.
Everything started between 5th and 34th Street, on a clear and cold afternoon, Maripol and I ran into one of those sudden strong gusts of wind that make you feel weirdly uncomfortable and estranged, kind of out of context. All of a sudden we hugged, with tears in our eyes, terrified by the metropolis, by our own loneliness and the lack of stable work. Attempting to overcome our own feelings, we walked right up to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building where the warmth of the light eventually welcomed us and showed to us the very essence of the city, the clouds, and the skyscrapers, the river and the ocean. It was certainly clear that New York was the only place where we wanted to stay. That city was going to be the luminous background of my photographs.
